A caregiver’s wish for her dad
“Dad, do not worry whether I have a job or not, just stay healthy.”
caregiver1Dear Dad, people always say that struggling to balance employment and the care of looking after an elderly parent can be taxing. That cannot be denied. But for me, having a supportive employer and an understanding father like you does make a difference.
Do not feel guilty that I had to give up my job when you were recuperating from operations for colorectal cancer and heart disease. You’re already 94 years old – taking care of you is my priority.
Now that I have returned to the workforce and found a full-time job at the Caregiving Welfare Association (CWA), I am thankful that my working hours are flexible so I can accompany you for check-ups. Employers who adopt flexible workplace practices, like CWA, really provide the support that working caregivers need. Also, the steady income supplements our daily needs.
You did not like the idea of going to a Day Care Centre, but sometimes I worry that you might accidentally fall or meet with other mishaps when you are alone at home. Although I know you have my interest at heart and always tell me to concentrate on my work, what I wish for most importantly is that you are well-provided for and can continue to stay healthy and comfortable.
